Love them old patterns but sometimes too spendy

I love this pattern but if I can find a modern one that will do the same why pay more! This is Simplicity 4704 look at that sweet bodice.
Now for a modern version. Burda 7688. The Burda Pattern is a top and some real ugly pants and basic long skirt. It would not take much to take a from either a vintage pattern you have and attach the top of the Burda or even use a modern skirt pattern and you have recreated this super cute vintage pattern without paying the vintage pattern price! The sleeves would be a breeze to add to as the cuts are the same.

  1. What a great similarity with the bodice you've found there! I agree that the modern pattern is nowhere near in the same league as the vintage one, but with your skill you could certainly make a good go of it!

  3. The vintage one is on Ebay right now 6 bids at $15.50. I'm watching it but doubt I will bid since I have the Burda pattern. Here is the link:

  4. A day later and the Simplicty is up to $36 bucks! Yes it is on my watch list but I knew it would go for too much hence the alternative.

  6. Actually, I bought that particular pattern. I've missed out on a 1950s shelf bust pattern with very similar design details before and decided that I didn't want this one to get away. I usually allow myself to acquire two or three really pricey patterns a year, so seeing as this pattern was in my prefered size and that I had the funds this month, I set a super-high max bid and came out on top. I hope to make a dress using this pattern sometime during March, which I will post about on my blog as well as the Sew Retro blog :)

Love your blog by the way ;)

  7. Wow Polly I'm jealous! I can't wait to see the dress you make out of if. I haven't used my Burda on but I'm going to try to recreate the vintage pattern with the Burda.

  10. Hi! Thanks for the lead on the Burda 7688, I've been trying to track down the Simplicity pattern and it's IMPOSSIBLE. Hahah. I'm wondering if you managed to make a dress with this neckline? I'd love more inspiration :D
